How I Write – Jane Liddle

When/how/where do you write?

I like to write first thing in the morning.  I’ve rarely been able to write at night. In Brooklyn I used to write at the dining room table because I hated my desk. The apartment was nice, but on the ground floor and dark, so there wasn’t much to look at except what was in front of me. I’d eventually make my way to the couch next to my birds. I recently moved to upstate NY and my husband and I switched desks. Now I write in the office on his beautiful desk and a view of a vineyard, with a pair of binoculars next to me. I hate the house we’re renting (it has sulfur water and is run-down) but the writing setup is ideal.

Do you eat while you write? If so, what?

I don’t eat. It’s a bad habit but I surf the Internet when I eat. I do always have tea or coffee.

Do you play music while you write? If so, what?

I like to play 90’s alternative albums when I write because I know them so well that they won’t distract me. Belly and Mazzy Star have been in rotation recently.

What are you reading right now?

Right now I am reading Elena Ferrante’s The Days of Abandonment.
