In, “Astronauts under the Sea Dance” (view here), King exposes the strangeness of how people mourn or pay homage to others after times of crisis or disaster. This is the type of piece that can be inspired by an event the writer took part in or from an occasion that is completely imagined.

Writing about trauma can be difficult; often it can seem ham-fisted. Write about a traumatic event from the vantage point of a child or an outsider—someone who doesn’t grasp or has no investment in the significance of this trauma. Consider the way their perception colors the event differently.
