Prompt #56 — Write Like Matt Bell

Writing flash doesn’t have to be like a choose your own adventure novel. You don’t have to write just one version of a story—you can write all of the versions. In Matt Bell’s Wolf Parts, he chose to write many versions of the same story and “The Girl in the Golden Hood”  (view here) is one example of how he chose to re-tell the story of Little Red Riddinghood.

PROMPT

Take a piece of flash that you have already written or write something new, then re-write that same story with subtle changes. Make the characters do different things, or perhaps write it from another character’s perspective. Change the ending of the piece, or change the actions leading up to the ending. Do this several times. Write and re-write your selected story by changing different elements each time. See how far you can stretch your imagination. Do this until you have written all of the possibilities. By then end you could find that you have a series of pieces that work together as a collection or as a larger, non-flash, body of work.
